Our sidekick named Elvis

The beauty of serendipity is that sometimes it deals itself when you least expect it. This morning, while rolling through some majestic California back roads with good friends, we meet a local. Not the traditional grilled ranch hand late for work rustling cattle, though this guy could be pretty good at that if asked. No this guy was game for running alongside our peloton for about 8 miles, and pulling away in front at times. He was fast, agile and fairly predictable in a tongue lolling, tail wagging sense of the word. Our new best friend Elvis visited us on today epic 122 mile journey North.

But did we mention the scenery. We should rename all these roads Deja Vu road, because around each bend, and over each hill, the scene that played out in front of us was so amazingly vast, and similar. Road surface varried, the cows changed color, the trees were moved, but each vista sure looked similar, and oh so inviting. I know this rider will have a tan marks on his face from smiling all damn day. Today was bliss on a bike.

But even bliss can be battlefield, so at about mile 50, we hit a patch of goat heads, and 12 flats later, we seemed to have tamed the malady, and moved on up the road. Up until this point, our average speed was great, but even with our multiple stops and tire changes, we managed a respectable 18 mph average over 122 miles. Wonderful
